Their wrap around bumper does not require cutting the body of the truck, but also isn't as high-clearance as the others. The changeable accessory holders is a good idea. Victor, MT The tube frame of the dual swing out is the best engineering I've seen. They have some great add-on options, such as propane tank mount.
#Evo swing away tire carrier license#
Their wrap around bumper doesn't have the hidden hitch behind a flip up license plate that some of the other guys have. One of their bumpers has a dual swing out, check it. Imagine, you can put it on your truck, your wife's car, and lend it to a friend. However, if you want a removable and configurable system this could be a great way to go. It's cute when you say, "my truck wagged his tail off" when you lose an antenna, but not great when you lose your recovery gear. It just seems like the side to side torsion would torque it right off if you have enough weight on it. I would think my truck would wag it right off and my gas, tire, and hi-lift would be lost on the trail. The Hitchgate: Personally I would never use this. Horizontal mount: Doesn't meet my personal needs, but if you're racing this is probably a cool solution. Doesn't have some of the features the other guys have, such as a camp table, and there's no tail gate to act as a table. I like that it has 4 contact points, but don't like that I have to pull two handles to open it. This replaces the tail gate, that's a weight savings, but you can't carry loose loads and it probably won't work with a camper shell. I'd ask for solid back plate so it holds rocks/mulch. Swing out tail gate replacement/conversion. It has more stamped steel and the right amount of tubing. Doesn't look overbuilt, ie, not a ton of extra metal. Seems to be one of the most cost effective. This looks like a much simpler and lighter option than the ones that use solid chunks of steel. The carrier is a little shorter, with the tire closer to the hinge, add-ons go on stamped steel. Additional options: locks open, telescoping light over camp table. Great looking carrier, tire is angled in a little, that is a pretty cool look. This is my favorite style of latch handle. Some people see a glass half full, others half empty, but an engineer sees the glass was built larger than was needed.ĭid I miss any great tire carriers? What do you guys think? Not too heavy, it needs to carry a tire, not stop a tank. Leaving the tire on is fine, but I don't need the rest of the kit. I have premium AAA, so I don't need to lug all this stuff on my daily commute. Also, made in America! And save on shipping.Ĭarrier/gear relatively easy to remove for when I'm not overlanding. And considering most of these come from custom fabrication shops I'm sure you can request custom fab.Ī shop relatively close in case I want to drive out and have them help with the install. A few offer special extras: lock in the open position, antenna mounts, backup camera relocation. Most offer these standard features: single or dual Jerry can holders, mounts for hi-lift and shovel, and drop down camp table. I've been taking notes to help with my choice, and figured I'd post my notes for anyone looking. I've been shopping for tire carriers and high clearance wrap around rear bumpers and found a bunch of great of choices. This is my running list of swing away tire carries for 2nd gen Tacomas.
